Harold Hagan GREENVILLE Harold Benjamin "Bo" Hagan 76, died Saturday morning January 22, 2002, at his home in Greenville.
Bo was a native of Savannah, where he was an all-state tailback on a Georgia State championship football team and was later inducted into the Savannah Hall of Fame of Sports Heroes. Serving as a Private First Class in the 303rd Infantry Regiment Company I in World War II, Bo saw action in both the Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns, receiving numerous medals including two Bronze Stars. After World War II, Bo enrolled at the University of South Carolina graduating in 1950 Cum Laude with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. In addition to graduating with honors, he lettered four years in football at quarterback and three years in baseball at pitcher. The highpoint was his 1949 season during the Big Thursday Clemson game.
Watching from the sidelines (due to two bad knees which doctors said had ended his football career) Bo came off the bench to erase a 13-7 Clemson lead throwing for two touchdowns and running for a third. That year he was voted MVP of his team and made Honorable Mention All-American. After graduating in 1950, Bo played one season of professional baseball with Jesup, in the Georgia State League and coached at Bass High School in Atlanta before joining the Georgia Tech football staff in 1951. After three season with Georgia Tech, Bo moved on to coach at SMU in Dallas, Texas for two seasons. In 1956 he joined the coaching staff at Rice University for 11 seasons.
He was promoted to Head Coach and Athletic Director in 1966 where he remained until 1970. In 1972 Bo joined the University of South Carolina as Administrative Assistant in the Athletic Department. Promoted to Athletic Director in 1975 he retired as Director of the Alumni Development in 1988. Upon retirement, he and his wife Nancy moved to Greenville where they enjoyed the local culture as well as traveling extensively throughout the world. Diagnosed with lymphoma in 1994, Bo remained the stoic figure everyone knew.
He continued to travel the world and enjoy life as he always had. It wasn't until early this past December that the disease really took hold. Our visit at Christmas found him in the hospital, but undaunted and very much himself. Weeks later the call came that he was in serious decline. Extremely weak and labored in his breathing his only concern was for his family.
Weakened by the ravages of cancer he once again came off the bench to kiss his wife and daughters and reassure them that he would always love them. With that he passed peaceably As per Bo's wishes, there has been a private ceremony for his immediate family. Any donations should be made to the Cancer Society of Greenville County, 113 Mills Avenue, Greenville, SC 29605. Cremation Society of South Carolina is handling arrangements. He is survived by his wife Nancy Hagan, Greenville, his daughters, Diana Miller, North Augusta and Lisa Pond, Montclair, NJ; granddaughter, Riley Rose Pond, Montclair, NJ and former wife, Doris, of Columbia.

Born in Nichols on March 2, 1948, he was a son of the late Edward Harley and Clara Stroud Harley. Mr. Harley graduated from Mullins High School and attended the University of South Carolina. He lived in Columbia, where he had a security business for a number of years. He and his family then made their home on Hilton Head Island for 14 years before moving to Aiken.
While living on the island, he was a real estate salesman for Palmetto Dunes Realty and later the Hilton Head Company, where he was named Salesman of the Year on several occasions, and also Rookie of the Year. Mr. Harley was also involved in a DEATHS HAROLD RUSSELL Won Oscars for playing disabled vet Harold Russell, who lost his hands in a World War II explosion and later won two Oscars for his sensitive portrayal of a double amputee in the coming home saga "The Best Years of Our Lives," has died. He was 88. Russell died of a heart attack Tuesday at a nursing home in Needham, his family said.
Despite the Academy Awards he won in 1947, Russell did little acting afterward. Instead, he devoted his life to being an advocate for the disabled. He helped establish the disabled veterans' advocacy group AMVETS. Russell joined the Army Dec. 8, 1941, the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor, as an instructor in the parachute corps.
He was working as an explosives expert in 1944 when a defective fuse exploded the TNT he was holding as he instructed a demolition squad at Camp Mackall, N.C. His hands were amputated. With hooks replacing his hands, Russell was featured in an Army documentary, "Diary of a Sergeant," on the rehabilitation of an amputee. Though Russell didn't say a word in the film, producer Sam Goldwyn saw it and wanted Russell to play Homer Parrish in "The Best Years of Our Lives." The 1946 film won seven Oscars, including best picture, best director for William Wyler and best actor for Fredric March. It also starred Myrna Loy, Dana Andrews and Teresa Wright.
The film depicted how WWII veterans coped with the aftermath of the war and ad their return to changed families a and community. Russell actually received two Oscars for the film: one as best supporting actor, and a special Oscar for "bringing aid and comfort to disabled veterans through the medium of motion pictures." "It is not what you have lost but what you have left that counts," he wrote in his 1949 autobiography, "Victory in My Hands." It told of his struggle to recover physically and psychologically from his wounds, and to use the hooks that replaced his hands. He became so adept in their use that he liked to joke he could do anything but pick up a dinner check. Russell spent his life working as an advocate for the disabled, helping establish AMVETS and creating a consulting business that helped the handicapped get jobs. He said it was his life's work to show disabled people that life could still be great, and he was good-natured about his own handicap.
"He was a humanitarian," his daughter, Adele Russell, said this past week. "He dedicated his life to the handicapped. (He was) a wonderful person to everyone he met. He touched everyone in some shape or form." Russell made few other movie appearances. His first role after "The Best Years of Our Lives" was 1980's "Inside Moves." He also appeared in the Vietnam War television series "China Beach." His last film role was in 1997's "Dogtown." In August 1992, Russell sold his supporting-actor Oscar, saying he needed the money to pay his wife's medical bills and other expenses.
An anonymous buyer paid $60,500. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences opposed the sale and offered to loan money to Russell. Then-Academy president Karl Malden said the statuettes "should not become objects of mere commerce." The academy said it was aware of no previous instance in which an Oscar had been sold by its recipient at public auction. Several Oscars have been auctioned since, most posthumously. Russell responded: "I don't know why anybody would be critical.
My wife's health is much more important than sentimental reasons." He was paid $10,000 for his role in the movie and received no residuals. "The movie will be here, even if Oscar isn't," he said. Russell was born in 1914 in Nova Scotia, Canada, and the family later moved to Cambridge, Mass. He got a business degree from Boston University after the war. In addition to his daughter, survivors include son Gerald, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He also held his license as a building contractor. Mr. Harley was a private pilot who flew extensively.
