James Jefferson Clark WEST COLUMBIA James Jeffer- son Clark, 74, went to be with the Lord with his family at his bedside on Saturday, May 28, 2011. He was born in Swansea, South Carolina to the late Donna Geddings and Har- ry F. Clark. He was married to Mar- garet Roberts Clark for 53 years. Jim was a graduate of Carlisle Mil- itary School and attended Clemson University and University of South Carolina.
He retired from Southern Bell Yellow Pages in management where he was salesman of the year several times. Jim and Margaret owned and operated Twilite Manor Residential Home for 20 years where they ministered to the elder- ly and their families. Jim was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, and he was the biggest fan of his grand- sports; including foot- ball, baseball, and the Blythewood Lady Bengals softball team. Jim was known to always give to others in need and in the end gave 14 months to clinical research for lung cancer, under the loving care of Dr. Fred Kudrick, nurse Alison Calvert and the fabulous staff of South Car- olina Oncology Associates.
Jim was a member of the loving family of Red Bank Baptist Church where he was the Treasurer, a Deacon, Trustee and Financial Officer and taught Sunday School for 40 years. Born in Rocky Mount, N.C. September 25, 1932, to Clarence Ross and Ada Brady Ritchie, he was the son and great grandson of Lutheran pastors. He grew up in Lexington, N.
C. where his fa- ther was a pastor, graduating from high school there. Dr. Ritch- ie earned his Bachelor of Arts De- gree in Business Administration and Religious Education at Le- noir-Rhyne College, Hickory, N.C. in 1954, and his Bachelor of Divinity Degree at Lutheran The- ological Southern Seminary in Columbia in 1957, and his Master of Sacred Theology Degree at the same seminary in 1967.
In 1980 he was awarded the honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree by Le- noir-Rhyne College. He was ordained to the minis- try of the United Lutheran Church in America on June 9, 1957, and served as pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Goldsboro, N.C. 1957- 60; St. Andrews Lutheran Church, Columbia, 1960-66; First Lutheran Church, Albemarle, N. C.
1966-71; and Augsburg Lu- theran Church Winston-Salem, N.C., 1971-88. In 1988 he joined the staff of Southern Seminary as Director of Planned Giving, retir- ing in 1992. Dr. Ritchie served on numer- ous boards and committees of the Lutheran Synods of North and South Carolina, including mem- bership on the Executive Boards of both synods, The Lenoir- Rhyne College Board of Trustees, the North Carolina Lutheran Services for the Aging Board of Trustees, and as a delegate to sev- eral Lutheran Church in America Conventions. He had also served on the board of the Lenoir-Rhyne Alumni Association and as Presi- dent of the Lutheran Seminary Alumni Association.
After retiring in 1992, he served as Visiting Pastor at Refor- mation Lutheran Church, Co- lumbia, S.C. and as Interim Pas- tor at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Little Mountain; Grace Lutheran Church, Prosperity, S.C; Trinity Lutheran Church, Columbia; and Mt. Horeb Luther- an Church, Chapin, where he has been an active member during the past years, serving as usher, greeter, communion assistant, supply pastor, Sunday School teacher and a member of the Mu- tual Ministry Committee. Dr. Ritchie is survived by his wife, Jo Anne Hall Ritchie, of the home, whom he married on May 22, 1955; a sister, Barbara R.
